Understanding the options available when purchasing your next car

When it comes to buying a new or a secondhand vehicle, it is important that as a customer you understand the finance options available to you even if you are a cash buyer.

At J Edgar & Son we work closely with our franchise partners in ensuring we can offer the best deals possible to our customers. Many of our customers choose to finance their purchase, so they are able to spread the cost of the car over a fixed length of time. Nissan, Hyundai and Suzuki all have their own finance offers available with the latest and often best deals on new cars.

Car Finance FAQs

Common questions about financing a car through J Edgar & Son's Rowrah and Dunmail Park showrooms.

Is J Edgar & Son a lender?

No — J Edgar & Son Ltd acts as a credit broker, not a lender. We're an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd (FCA No. 522916) and can introduce you to a panel of lenders, including manufacturer lenders linked to the Nissan, Hyundai, and Suzuki franchises we represent.

What's the difference between Hire Purchase, PCP, and Personal Contract Hire?

With Hire Purchase (HP), you pay off the full vehicle price in fixed instalments and own the car outright once you've made the final payment. With Personal Contract Purchase (PCP), monthly payments are lower because they cover the difference between the car's price and its predicted future value, and at the end you can pay a final "balloon" payment to own it, hand it back, or trade it in. With Personal Contract Hire (PCH), you're effectively leasing the car for a fixed term and mileage allowance — you never own the vehicle, and hand it back at the end.

Why finance a car through a dealership rather than my bank?

Dealership finance, like the options at J Edgar & Son, gives access to manufacturer-linked lenders tied directly to the Nissan, Hyundai, or Suzuki franchise you're buying from — these lenders are often able to offer preferential rates and contributions specific to that brand. If a manufacturer lender can't make you an offer, we introduce you to the next best option from our panel.

Do Nissan, Hyundai, and Suzuki offer their own finance deals?

Yes — Nissan, Hyundai, and Suzuki each have their own manufacturer finance offers, often with the latest and most competitive rates on new cars. Our team can talk you through the current offers for whichever brand you're interested in.

Can I get car finance if I'm a cash buyer?

You don't have to finance your car, but it's worth understanding the options even as a cash buyer — sometimes a manufacturer finance offer can work out better value than paying outright, once contributions and incentives are factored in. Our team can talk you through whether that applies to your chosen model.

Does J Edgar & Son charge for arranging finance?

Lenders may pay J Edgar & Son a commission for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle or amount borrowed — this does not affect the amount you pay under your finance agreement. If you ask what the commission amount is, we'll confirm it before your finance agreement is executed.

Can I check my credit before applying?

Yes — use our Motor Credit Check tool to get an indication of your finance options before formally applying.

What happens if I have a complaint about my finance agreement?

Complaints can be sent in writing to Automotive Compliance Ltd, The Factory, 44 Alfred Street, Gloucester, GL1 4DD, or by phone on 01452 671560. If your complaint isn't resolved within 8 weeks, you can refer the dispute to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to use, on 0800 023 4567 or 0300 123 9123.

Am I eligible for car finance?

All finance applications are subject to status and eligibility checks, and are available to UK residents aged 18 or over. Guarantees may be required in some circumstances. [CONFIRM: if you want to state a typical minimum deposit, term length, or APR range here, add it — otherwise leave this general, since specific figures vary by lender and should be current at time of publishing.]

J Edgar & Son (Dunmail Park):

J Edgar & Son Limited is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 522916). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows J Edgar & Son Limited to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only. We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
