Buying Online

What should I look for when buying a used car?

Match the vehicle to your actual needs first — size, fuel type (petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric), and trim level — then set a budget. At J Edgar & Son we stock used Nissan, Hyundai, Suzuki, and a range of other makes across our Rowrah and Workington showrooms, so you can compare fuel types and trims side by side before deciding.

What should I check before buying a used car from a dealer?

When buying from a dealer like J Edgar & Son, check the vehicle's general condition, ask to see the full service history, and take it for a test drive. All our used cars are prepared and checked before sale.

What is the best new family car?

It depends on your family's size and how you use the car, but our most popular family choices are the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, and Suzuki S-Cross — all in stock as new orders at our Workington (Hyundai/Suzuki) and Rowrah (Nissan) showrooms.

What should I consider when buying a new car?

Think about space, how you'll use the car day-to-day, and any safety or convenience features you need — then talk to us about whether Hyundai, Nissan, or Suzuki best fits that. We stock and can order new vehicles across all three brands from our Rowrah and Dunmail Park showrooms.

Are used cars reliable?

Modern used cars are generally reliable, especially when bought from an approved dealer with a checked service history. All used vehicles at J Edgar & Son are prepared and checked before sale.

Which J Edgar & Son showroom should I visit — Rowrah or Workington?

Visit Rowrah (Frizington, CA26 3XJ) for new and used Nissan, or Dunmail Park (Workington, CA14 1NQ) for new and used Hyundai and Suzuki. Both sites stock used vehicles across multiple makes. Rowrah is around 5 miles from Whitehaven; Dunmail Park is on Siddick Road in Workington.

Can I part-exchange my current car?

Yes — use our free online valuation tool to get an estimated part-exchange value, then bring your car in for a full in-person valuation at either showroom.

Motability

Am I eligible for the Motability scheme?

You may be eligible for the Motability scheme if you receive certain rate of disability-related benefits. J Edgar & Son is a Motability dealer for Hyundai, Nissan, and Suzuki at both our Rowrah and Workington showrooms — see our Motability eligibility page or contact us to check.

Looking After Your Vehicle

When does a new car need an MOT?

New cars don't need an MOT until three years after their registration date, then annually after that.

How often should I service my car?

Most manufacturers recommend a service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first — but check your owner's manual, since intervals vary by model. We service Hyundai, Nissan, and Suzuki vehicles to manufacturer standard at both our Rowrah and Workington workshops.

What does a full car service include?

A full service covers the vehicle's key systems — engine oil and filter, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, and fluid levels — checked against manufacturer specification.

What is checked for in an MOT?

An MOT checks all core safety systems: lights, brakes, tyres, seatbelts, exhaust emissions, steering, and suspension.

Can I book a service or MOT online?

Yes — use the "Book Your Service / MOT" link on our homepage to book directly for either showroom.

Financing

How does car finance work?

Car finance lets you pay for a vehicle over an agreed term at fixed monthly payments. J Edgar & Son can introduce you to a panel of lenders, including manufacturer lenders for Hyundai, Nissan, and Suzuki, and typically offer Hire Purchase (HP) and Personal Contract Purchase (PCP). J Edgar & Son Ltd is a credit broker, not a lender, and is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd (FCA No. 522916).

What's the difference between PCP and Hire Purchase?

With Hire Purchase, you pay off the full vehicle price in instalments and own it outright at the end. With PCP, your monthly payments are lower because they cover the difference between the car's price and its predicted future value, and at the end you can pay a final "balloon" payment to own it, hand it back, or trade it in for a new deal.

Are newer cars cheaper to insure?

Not always — insurance depends more on the vehicle's specification and safety features than age alone. Newer cars often include more advanced safety and security tech, which can help lower premiums compared with an older equivalent model.
