Times have changed since Joseph Edgar started up an agricultural engineering business at Rowrah. Today, Joseph’s grandson Terry is holding the reins along with his own two sons, Jason and Justin. In keeping with modern trends, they operate from impressive purpose built premises at Dunmail Park, Workington and a new showroom that’s just been constructed at Rowrah. There’s also a new franchise to complement the existing Suzuki and Hyundai dealerships. The Nissan hut Joseph erected almost 90 years ago has disappeared but the name proudly displayed over these new premises is NISSAN.

"The name above our door hasn’t changed in almost 90 years and we take some pride in that fact," says Terry. "The Company is still entirely owned and controlled by our family and every one of us has come through the business from ground floor to partnership level. We’ve always operated a "hands on" policy and, whether you’re dealing with a family member or a highly trained member of staff, you’ll still receive the courteous and helpful attention that we positively insist upon."

Edgars place a high value upon experience and aim to provide their employees with a job for life should they choose. This means that a sizeable majority has been with the Company for many years. Employees are encouraged to improve existing skills and develop the same pride in their work that Joseph Edgar himself once insisted upon.

More than half a century ago, the firm started to sell Austin cars, forerunners of Rover. With the demise of Britain’s last major car manufacturer this association sadly came to an end. However, the British connection is still retained as a majority of Nissan models are built over in Sunderland, still one of Europe’s most productive car factories.

Modern workshop facilities combined with well trained and highly motivated technicians ensure that customers get the best possible service. "After all, service is what we’ve been famous for since my grandfather’s day, "declares Terry. "We have a reputation to maintain and all of us in the Company intend to guard it very jealously".
